Breathless - an Angel/Darla fanmix
Oct. 6th, 2007 06:14 pmi've been writing spangel all week, and... i'm getting a little tired of them. so i decided to do a fanmix for my actual otp: angel/darla. i've never done a fanmix before, but it was a lot of fun, so i definitely think i'll be doing this again.

you can download a zip of all the tracks from sendspace here: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/6qztvg (change the xx to tt) or get them individually below. i recommend getting them all - because they're good songs, and if you listen to them in order then you sort of get an entire picture of the angel/darla relationship from the beginning all the way until they sleep together in season two of angel. i've been listening to it all day. *single tear* (ETA: please ignore the random pictures of billy joel in the zip folder. that's... not my fault.)
1. light as the breeze, performed by billy joel: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/0stmuk
[lyrics] by leonard cohen
i chose "light as the breeze" to represent angel's turning. it's kind of jazzy, and the lyrics fit them very well: it's about a woman whose lover worships her to begin with, then sort of resents her but still can't resist her - but if you read the lyrics in the context of angel/darla, then it actually sounds like liam kneeling in the alley and drinking darla's blood, then letting go of his old life and becoming very peaceful, with darla being all powerful and smug the whole time. and it's a pretty song. i think this type of song fits their relationship, so there are a few jazzy pieces in this mix.
2. breathin', by the asylum street spankers: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/dx8786
i can't find the lyrics online, but this song, to me, represents the way darla feels about angelus. it's jazzy/bluesy, sexy, and breathy, which is appropriate given the title. the idea is that it's so easy for her to love him that it comes naturally and isn't something that she could stop doing - like breathing in and breathing out. the irony is of course that darla doesn't need to breathe, so she could easily give him up, but she doesn't want to. also, since the song is very sexy, it represents all the incredible sex that they're constantly having. in my opinion. :)
3. the change, by jon dee graham: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/9mmjrm
these lyrics are not online either, but this one represents angel getting cursed with a soul and leaving darla. he says stuff like, "do you see the change in me? i'm not the man i used to be..." it's a very sad song and kind of slow, and to me it's about regret. regarding darla: "you've been weighing on my mind." i defy you to listen to this one, think about angel and darla, and not get misty-eyed.
4. you were mine, by the dixie chicks: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/byimj0
[lyrics]
the first time you hear this song, even if you're not thinking about this 'ship, you're going to cry. it's about a woman whose lover left and she doesn't want to accept it. i chose it to represent darla's feelings after angelus is cursed. when she says, "please tell me she's not real," she refers to angel's new soul. also, spike and drusilla are mentioned: "he's two and she's four, and you know they adore you..." it's a little bit country, but it still seems very appropriate. actually, this song is the one i was thinking about when i decided to do a fanmix for angel/darla to begin with.
5. the scientist, by coldplay: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/d7baph
[lyrics]
this song represents angel going back to darla after he's been cursed because he misses her: "Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry/ You dont know how lovely you are/ I had to find you, tell you I need you/ Tell you I set you apart..." he wants to start over, for everything to be like it was before the soul: "Nobody said it was easy/ Oh its such a shame for us to part/ Nobody said it was easy/ No one ever said that it would be this hard... Oh take me back to the start." i don't think it's necessarily a sad song, but in the context of the angel/darla ship, i find it very sad because we know that it doesn't work out when he tries to go back to her, even though they both want it to very much. but either way, it's pretty.
6. whistles the wind, by flogging molly: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/4d2vj2
[lyrics]
even though this one is sung by a man, i think of it as darla's perspective. it's been a hundred years and she's come to sunnydale, and she sees angel. these are her thoughts: "Well it breaks my heart to see you this way/ The beauty in life, where's it gone?/ And somebody told me you were doing okay/ But somehow I guess they were wrong." the somebody, to me, is spike after seeing angel on the submarine. he runs into darla later and tells her that angel's okay. (hey, it could have happened.) the other lyrics sound like darla's thoughts as well, and the song has a kind of irish sound to it, which fits if it's about angel.
7. foolish games, by jewel: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/w815zp
[lyrics]
for this song, i picture the scene in season one of buffy when darla's at angel's apartment when he comes home. she tries to persuade him that his vampire side will win out over his human side, but he doesn't want to listen to her - and "foolish games" is about a woman who feels very strongly for a man who's not paying her much attention. she's not willing to show how she really feels, though, thinking it's perfectly obvious, although he doesn't have a clue: "Well in case you failed to notice/ In case you failed to see/ This is my heart bleeding before you/ This is me down on my knees..." darla isn't actually begging because she's much too proud, but she's getting as close to that as possible without losing face. i find these lyrics especially fitting: "Well, excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else/ Somebody who gave a damn/ Somebody more like myself." she's complaining that he doesn't seem to care, but we know from that episode that he does actually care and it tears him up to have to do what he eventually does.
8. samson, by regina spektor: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/m7x6ki
[lyrics]
this one represents darla's death at angel's hands, and her thoughts in the split second between being staked and actually dusting. the lyrics are a little disjointed, which they would be if someone were dying, but almost every line seems to make sense in the context of their relationship - especially this: "You are my sweetest downfall/ I loved you first, I loved you first." when she says first, i'm letting that mean that she loved angel before buffy did. the references to wonderbread actually sound like something darla would say to pick on angel about trying to be some kind of hero, and "Your hair was long when we first met" is self-explanatory. of course, the whole song is comparing a man to samson, meaning that he used to be strong and now he isn't any longer, which in this case means that angel used to be angelus and now he's this short-haired hero-wannabe who eats wonderbread, but a very telling line, i think is this: "Oh I cut his hair myself one night/ A pair of dull scissors in the yellow light/ And he told me that I'd done alright/ And kissed me 'til the mornin' light." i'm letting that be a reference to the fact that darla is actually the one who brought angelus the gypsy girl in the first place, so it's technically her fault that he was cursed. she blames herself for his weakness now - but even though angel chooses buffy over darla, darla still gets the last laugh because she loved him first. so there. :)
9. downfall, by matchbox20: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/3lcvty
[lyrics]
this song represents... pretty much all of season two of angel. it's from darla's POV again, even though it's a man's voice, and it's about coming to him in his sleep and trying to get him to change back into someone she can be with, while also letting him believe he can "save" her: "Be my savior and I'll be your downfall." i think this song sums them up very nicely - i even vidded it, but i never put the vid online since it wasn't very good. some particularly appropriate lines: "I've always been with you" and "Here we go again/ Ashamed of being broken in/ We're getting off track/ I wanna get you back again... I want you to trouble me/ I wanted you to linger/ I want you to agree with me/ I want so much so bad."
10. she will be loved, by maroon5: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/ptv5wt
[lyrics]
this is another perfect season two song for angel and darla, only this time from angel's POV. for further explanation of the song in the context of the angel/darla 'ship, right click and save [this video by sweetie], which is my favorite fanvid ever. sweetie's other vids are [here at her site], but for some reason it takes me a long time to load the page. hmm. anyway, it has to do with angel's willingness to help human!darla and mentions also darla's relationship with lindsey.
11. breathe me, by sia: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/939whi
[lyrics]
i chose this song to represent the sort of breakdown that human!darla has in season two of angel. remember when lindsey finds her bloody after she hurt herself? and she doesn't know what to do or where to go, so she goes to angel? that's this song perfectly. it's darla asking angel for help.
12. breathless, by better than ezra: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/e4ysm6
[lyrics]
"breathless" is angel's reaction to darla coming to him for help. he's relieved and wants to assure her that he'll do whatever he can. it's a sort of beautiful song, by one of my favorite bands, and represents angel's willingness to be or do anything that darla needs, like diving headfirst into an empty swimming pool. it's his promise that he'll take care of her.
13. ill wind, performed live by ella fitzgerald: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/zb3zsq
[lyrics] by harold arlen
of course i had to include this song, both because it's pretty and because darla actually sings it at caritas when they go there for lorne's help in finding a cure for her.
14. save me, by aimee mann: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/equmk2
[lyrics]
i chose this song to represent darla's acceptance that she's going to die, so the lyrics are ironic. not only does angel not save darla from her inevitable death, but he also doesn't save her from being turned by drusilla and from rising as a vampire. so, in this context, it's a very depressing song because of how spectacularly angel fails her. my brother vidded this song, showing how angel fails to save darla, cordelia, and connor, and if you're interested, you can right click and save it [here].
15. harder to breathe, by maroon5: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/jv8fg1
[lyrics]
"harder to breathe" represents angel's anger at himself for failing to save darla and his violence toward her as a vampire. this is the song wherein he fires his friends: "How dare you say that my behavior is unacceptable/ So condescending unnecessarily critical." and then he "fires" darla and drusilla: "I have the tendency of getting very physical/ So watch your step cause if I do you'll need a miracle." and then of course he screws darla and kicks her out: "You drain me dry and make me wonder why I'm even here/ This Double Vision I was seeing is finally clear/ You want to stay but you know very well I want you gone/ Not fit to fuckin' tread the ground that I'm walking on."
i ended the mix with angel throwing darla out (without killing her, notice) because there's no more room on the cd, and i didn't have a song about a woman showing back up with a mystical pregnancy anyway. i'm calling the collection "breathless" because, well, they are, but also because so many of the song titles reference breathing or wind, and my favorite song out of these is the one called "breathless." please download and enjoy them! and i'd love to hear what you think or download any songs you think also fit this pairing, which is very dear to my heart.
