i'd been staring at the last chapter of "friday" all day and decided to take a break, so i - for some reason - put in an old disk of stuff i wrote that i managed to save from my laptop before it crashed, and i found two attempts at queer as folk (US) fic that i had completely forgotten about. i've never posted fic from other fandoms before (although i've written some) but i figured what the hell. so i'm posting one of the qaf things.

the idea behind this (i think) was to take 50 prompts and write a single sentence using each prompt. at least, that's what i had been doing with them. but i only did the first 26, and i cheated because i kept using semicolons and dashes and stuff. so some of them are pretty long.

i haven't seen any qaf for over a year, and to be honest i've forgotten most of what happens and even some of the characters' names (who's joan?) so i don't know if the characterization here is very good... but if i don't post it now then i never will and i must have spent a while working on this so i might as well post it rather than just throwing it out, right?

(is anyone on my flist even interested in queer as folk?)

Author's Notes: See above.

01. Heavy

Lindsey practically shoves Gus into his father's arms, so grateful for the relief of his round baby self weighing down someone else for a change that she almost misses the sudden look of wonder in Brian's eyes, the proud smile as he murmurs, "Getting heavy, sonny-boy," and it probably shouldn't irritate her so much that he only notices Gus's weight because he's gone so long between visits, but because of the newness he's still experiencing, she spares him the lecture; that is, until after the remark about putting the child on Atkins.

02. Slip

So they're standing on top of the hospital, on the very edge of the roof, teetering over an eight-storey drop while pretending to be comic book characters, and he's got no idea exactly why they're doing this or even how they got there, but somehow Michael can feel that this moment is significant, that this dangerous stunt marks the start of something big, something epic; right now, the thought of that is even scarier to him than gravity, but as long as he can feel his best friend's body warm and solid behind him, he doesn't have to think about it, because he knows with conviction that Brian would never let him slip.

03. Uphold

"You're so pathetic, Mikey," he says, and waits for his friend to protest that he's just trying to uphold the law, be an upright citizen, or give some other lame excuse for being a buzzkill, but Michael just sighs and says he's had enough, that he's going home and Brian can do whatever the hell he wants, and when he turns away Brian's thrown for a moment, but only a moment; he pulls his friend into a hug, steals a kiss that he prolongs just long enough to be devastating, and once again, has to congratulate himself on being completely irresistible, or at least persuasive enough to hold Michael Novotny willing captive for one more night.

04. Magic

Brian snorts the white powder and wipes his nose, watching as the dance floor becomes liquid skin, shiny in the blue strobe lights like moonlight on the ocean or that fucking... that fucking glittery thing in the sky in Alaska and damn, for a mere disco pharmocologist, Anita's got some serious cranked up mojo.

05. Hurry

"I've got someone waiting for me," Brian says with a grin, backing out of the store with a small wave but not looking back once he turns to go, and Michael smiles a little to himself, thinks yeah, you always do.

06. Hole

Takes balls to shove your cock through a hole in the wall, not knowing what's going to happen to it on the other side, Brian thinks for a moment, but when the sucking starts, he sighs and tilts his head back, closes his eyes, tries not to tell himself that on some level, he's always known that everybody wants his dick in their mouth.

07. Music

It's been almost three weeks since Blake disappeared from rehab, and Ted stares at his CDs, runs his fingers over the titles, remembers the sound of opera clattering to the tile floor as he walked out, and finally drops his hand without selecting anything.

08. Inside

Sometimes Mel just puts a hand against her belly and smiles for no reason.

09. Later

Justin tries to roll him over, but Brian pushes back, and little by little it becomes a mini wrestling match, both contestants grinning and rolling in the bed, suddenly kissing and then fucking, Justin taking it like always and god it feels so good... but he knows that Brian's just putting it off, postponing the moment that he becomes vulnerable to his lover, and Justin goes along with it, but only because he knows that sooner or later Brian will give in, will realize what he's missing, and because he knows that he can wait, that he'll still be here in this bed the moment it happens.

10. One

"Really, never?" the twink asks, and Michael shrugs, takes a sip of his drink, the "he's my best friend" excuse on the tip of his tongue, but this guy doesn't seem like he'd believe that anyway, so he doesn't say anything, and the twink goes on, "Can't imagine being the only guy in Pittsburgh who hasn't fucked Brian Kinney," adding with a smile, "Must be lonely," but Michael just takes another sip, shrugs again, looks away.

11. World

Jennifer knows to go straight to Liberty Avenue when she's looking for her son, knows deep down that it's just a place, just a regular street like any other, with people like any other, but she can't help wondering how, just a mile or so from her own comfortable home, there can be a place that is so completely different, that feels like someone picked her up and dropped her on another planet as soon as she turns the corner with the waving rainbow flags.

12. Cheat

Somehow it's worse that he's a man, and although Lindsey feels this truth deeply she can't really explain it, to herself or to Melanie, because it would be like saying there is a kind of sex that it's wrong to have, and doesn't that go against everything that they've fought for and believed in for so long?

13. Pink

"Who're you calling a faggot?" Michael screams after the two boys, enraged but still wondering if the encounter would have gone any better had he not been wearing his pink Babylon tank top.

14. Love

It wasn't love that first night together, even though Justin had been well and truly convinced at the time, but now that it is, he can feel the difference in the slightest touch - a warm hand on his hip, the ghost of lips at his neck - hear it in the softest grunt of completion, the smallest inhaled breath, a thousand tiny moments filling him fuller every night.

15. Eat

Every once in a while at the diner, when Michael pauses a moment to really think about his friends while they're all sitting and chattering carelessly away, he gets this fleeting frightening feeling that it may be the last time that they all sit here, that anything could happen to any one of them at any time and there would be nothing he could do about it, that the next time they're all together could be at the hospital, the morgue, a funeral home, his heart getting that much tighter when he notices Justin's shaky hand, only snapping out of his worry in time to smile warmly at his mother, order one more lemon bar to go.

16. Stone

The one they finally decided on for Vic was very plain, but even though Debbie promised to come plant flowers around him to pretty the place up a bit, she knew deep down that they would just get mown over, that his only monument would be that flat little rock, and it just didn't seem right.

17. Boss

"You know, you could get in some pretty deep shit if someone finds out you're fucking an intern," he teases, but Brian only smiles, trails his fingers down Justin's body, pops open the top button on his pants.

18. Feather

For the first time since he came Pittsburgh, Emmett wonders if the pink feather boa is over the top, so after much internal debating, he decides to go with the sparkly black one instead.

19. Here

Sometimes he thinks about fucking Michael, and the desire is never greater than times like this, when they're lying on the floor together in the loft, getting high and laughing their asses off, when he's feeling closer to his best friend than he ever has to anyone in the world, when he's got Michael's head resting in his lap and he can't help but think, as long as he's here...

20. Now

Michael lies awake, tries to enjoy Ben's snoring because he knows one day it won't be there, and he snuggles closer, scared to death of time.

21. Parent

Joan tells herself that she did the best she could, that at least one of them turned out normal.

22. Free

Chris Hobbes takes some free condoms from the fag he let jerk him off, and he pictures for a moment using them on the kid, giving the prissy boy what he's so obviously asking for, but then he remembers who he is and where he is, and the condoms end up tucked into his wallet for use later with some drunk chick whose name he won't remember.

23. Dish

The first time she made tuna-macaroni casserole for Brian, Debbie never expected to see her casserole dish again, but there it was two days later, washed, a rolled joint lying inside as if in payment.

24. Worry

When Hunter goes, he's not really gone; he becomes the lump in Ben's throat, the burning in his stomach, the empty space between him and Michael on the couch.

25. Way

Listening to Ted share at their impromptu AA meeting, Emmett suddenly pictures the two of them staying, cycling across Canada on their own together, and how romantic it would be, but then he thinks about spending another god-awful week without indoor plumbing and hopes desperately that they'll be able to find the way back.

26. Star

He watches Godiva pull the wig on tight, smooth her hands down the shimmering pink dress, blow a kiss at the mirror, and the skinny boy from Hazelhurst wants to be just like her, shining and fearless like her, so he says so and she smiles with wide, painted lips, tells him, "Honey, you go on fanning that flame 'til it burns bright as mine, and I promise you, one day you'll be a star."
